5 Key Wardrobe Must Haves That Will Transition Through Each Season

By Tara R. Alexander

Have you ever felt like you’re constantly bombarded with headliners like “The Latest Trends of the Season” while you’re sifting through the pages of a fashion magazine? You want to stay current with the latest trends but you want to stay within your budget. What do you do?

Take a deep breath and then look in your closet to see what you currently already have. I’ll bet you that you have some pieces that you never thought could transition into other seasons. We’ve been led to think that as each season comes and goes, so should our entire wardrobe. That fabulous sundress you absolutely love wearing during spring and summer can be worn in fall by adding a boyfriend sweater and a belt. Pair opaque tights or leggings with a pair of boots and voila, you can have a great outfit!

Check out this list of basic key items that will transition you through each season.

  1. A Basic Black Dress - It’s a golden rule that every woman should own a simple, elegant black dress that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. A black dress can be worn with a jacket and pumps for daytime business wear or with more ornate jewelry and accessories for evening.
  1. Basic White Shirt - It is simply a classic! A crisp white shirt is a great item in every woman’s closet because it’s the “building block” of a wardrobe. But most important, it’s affordable, versatile and can be worn in several stylish ways.
  1. Classic Trench Coat - Definitely, this can be a girl’s best friend! It gives a woman a well-put-together look by taking her anywhere from the corporate office to a casual brunch with girlfriends.
  1. Straight-Leg Denim Jeans - This is a “must-have” in every woman’s wardrobe. This cut is great for women of all shapes and sizes. Finding the right pair of jeans that fit properly will not only enhance your figure but will give you the comfort and look you want. A dark wash jean goes a long way in creating several looks from day to night.
  1. Statement Pieces- Scarves, belts, bold pieces of jewelry (i.e. earrings, necklaces, rings, broaches, and bracelets), and handbags are great to spruce up any outfit.

Embrace Who You Are!

By Tara Alexander

The other day I was watching Entertainment Tonight. They were featuring a story about the 20 year old supermodel, Kate Upton. Known for her curves and large busts, the blonde beauty has been deemed as “The Hottest Supermodel on Earth”. While she has appeared on covers of such magazines as Sports Illustrated and Vogue, there are critics who view her curvaceous body as being “fat” or “overweight”.

Upton’s response was clear and simple: "The things that they're rejecting are things that I can't change. I can't change my bra size. They're natural.. I love my body. It's what God gave me! I feel confident with myself, and if that inspires other women to feel confident with their bodies, great."

There are several lessons that we can learn from Kate. In my opinion, the most important lesson is to - Embrace  Who You Are! Accept what God has given you and love it! My mother recently reminded me of this exact quote. She even recommended that I write it down and repeat it daily. So, it has become my mantra.

Messages from the media are around us all the time. These messages are imposing standards and creating expectations of what real beauty is. We must be careful not to become victims of their influence. Let’s just look at it for what it should be – a great source for inspiration and ideas- not the things that define who you are.

What Is Style?

By Tara Alexander

Recently I attended a networking event and was introduced to a gentleman. He asked me what I did, and I replied: “I’m a Fashion Stylist and an Image Consultant.” He was curious and probed more about my profession. As I began to explain that I help my clients discover their personal style. He simply asked; “What is Style?” I was eager to take on that question. Style is a representation or expression of who you are. One way we express this is by what we wear – our choice of clothes, accessories, and even shoes. It’s our overall look!

I thought more about the meaning of “style” and how often it’s misused. Most often it is associated or confused with wearing the current trends. Below is a link to an article which gives an interesting approach to the meaning of “style”.
